Human Papillomavirus (HPV)

What is HPV?

HPV stands for Human Papillomavirus. It is the most common sexually transmitted infection. In fact, HPV is so common that nearly all med and women will get at least one type of the virus in their lifetime.

Does HPV cause health problems?

In most cases, HPV goes away on its own. But when the virus does not go away, it can cause genital warts and several types of cancer.

Why is it so important to receive the HPV vaccine at a young age?

Vaccines help protect your child before they are exposed to the disease. For the vaccine to be most effective, it is best to receive it earlier rather than later. As an added benefit, patients who begin the series before age 15 receive two shots versus three.

Why do boys need HPV vaccine?

HPV vaccination can help prevent infections that can lead to some make cancers. Vaccinating men also helps reduce spread of the virus within our population overall.

Is the HPV vaccine safe?

Yes! Over 10 years of monitoring and research has shown the vaccine to be very safe. The vaccine went through years of extensive safety testing before FDA licensing. THe FDA only licenses a vaccine if it is safe, effective, and if the benefits outweigh the risks.
